A local festival
Lightning in a Bottle
Lightning in a Bottle is a massive festival that happens every year at Buena Vista Aquatic Recreation Area, bringing tens of thousands of people into Kern County from all over California and beyond.
What’s honestly kind of crazy is that an event of this size happens right here in our backyard. People travel from across the country and even outside the U.S. to attend LIB, while a lot of locals still don’t even realize one of the biggest festivals in California happens just outside Bakersfield every year. Someone recently told me they met attendees who traveled internationally just for the festival.
It’s way more than just a music festival too. LIB is basically its own temporary city filled with live music, art installations, camping, food vendors, workshops, yoga, speakers, and all kinds of creative experiences spread across the lake grounds over multiple days.
The festival also brings a pretty major tourism boost to the area every year, with local hotels, restaurants, gas stations, grocery stores, and businesses all seeing increased traffic throughout the week.
I’ll be attending Lightning in a Bottle for the first time this year and bringing you guys some local coverage from inside the festival grounds, so keep an eye on The Bakersfield Guy socials over the next few weeks. I made a video talking about the festival on socials as well. Check it out.
If you’d like to attend, there’s still some tickets left! It’s happening from Wednesday May 20th until Sunday May 24th. Hope to see you there!
In The City: Bakersfield City Council Recap
Sewer Rate Increase Sparks Heated Debate
The biggest topic of the night was the proposed sewer rate increase. Residents packed council chambers to speak against the plan, with many arguing that families, renters, and seniors are already struggling with rising costs. City officials said Bakersfield’s sewer infrastructure is aging rapidly and that the city has delayed major upgrades for decades. Instead of voting immediately, the council voted to continue discussions and revisit alternative options later this month.
Considering the obvious consensus from the community was this was a negative thing because it was such a drastic increase, this is a step in the right direction I believe.
Apparently only over 1k of the needed 50k+ written protest needed to lawfully shut this down were actually gotten. Taken this into consideration, from what I heard, city council were really hearing people out and concerned with the affordability. It seems like they’re already leaning towards shutting this down.
Kern River Water Debate Returns
Several residents and environmental advocates spoke about the Kern River and the need for more flowing water through Bakersfield. Speakers argued that restoring water flow could help wildlife, improve air quality, and strengthen the river ecosystem. Others referenced long running legal and environmental battles tied to river management and future restoration efforts.
Let’s get the river flowing throughout the city river!
Safety Concerns on Harris Road
Residents from southwest Bakersfield pushed the city to address speeding and safety issues on Harris Road following a recent tragic accident. Community members asked for traffic calming measures, lane reductions, medians, and stronger enforcement near parks and schools. Vice Mayor Andrae Gonzalez said city departments are now meeting weekly to work toward both immediate and long term safety improvements.
State Housing Mandates Frustrate Council
Council members and staff spent significant time discussing California housing mandates and the pressure cities face to comply with state housing goals. Bakersfield has been assigned more than 37,000 housing units under the current housing cycle, and officials admitted the city is nowhere near on pace. Council members also criticized Sacramento for requiring local zoning and policy changes that some feel reduce local control over neighborhoods and development decisions.
The big gripe, from what I could tell, seems that they’re having to comply to goals from people that don’t understand our city.
Public Works Employees Recognized
The council closed the night by recognizing National Public Works Week and honoring city public works employees. Officials highlighted the crews responsible for maintaining roads, sewer systems, traffic signals, storm response, and city infrastructure, often working overnight, during storms, or in extreme heat to keep Bakersfield running.
