In The City

Downtown Chase Bank Hostage Situation

I’m sure we all heard about it, but downtown Bakersfield was the center of a massive police response this week after reports of a hostage situation involving a man allegedly armed with explosives near the Chase Bank area.

Police, SWAT, and emergency crews flooded downtown as roads were shut down and residents were urged to avoid the area throughout the day. Videos and photos shared online showed a heavy law enforcement presence surrounding the scene while many people across Bakersfield followed updates in real time.

After hours of negotiations and response efforts, the situation was ultimately resolved safely with the hostage rescued. I hope they find peace in due time.

Definitely one of the more surreal situations Bakersfield has seen in a while.

Last note: I don’t want to be the account covering these situations, but I’d also be remise not to bring it up. Plenty of other Bakersfield-based accounts looking at this type of news.

Canelo Alvarez Comes to Bakersfield

A picture I got with my front of the crowd waiting Canelo’s arrival! This was at the Foodmaxx on Niles st.

In other news, superstar boxer Canelo was in town this week promoting his new drink and ended up causing a frenzy around Bakersfield.

Fans packed locations including FoodMaxx and Walmart after word quickly spread online that the undisputed boxing champion was making appearances around town. Videos showed crowds gathering in parking lots hoping to grab photos, autographs, and catch a quick glimpse of one of the biggest athletes in the world.

One of the wildest scenes came from the FoodMaxx stop, where people flooded the area while others pulled up after seeing posts online.

Definitely not something you expect to casually see happening in Bakersfield on a weekday afternoon.

Father’s Day Farmers Market at the Outlets at Tejon

Saturday, June 6 • 4PM–8PM

The Outlets at Tejon are hosting a Father’s Day weekend farmers market this Saturday featuring local vendors, live music, giveaways, food, drinks, and family-friendly activities throughout the evening.

There’s hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars worth of goods being given away. Gift cards, a pizza oven, a Blackstone Grill, all kinds of tools, grilling sets and more!

Families will be able to grab complimentary blankets to sit out on the lawn and enjoy the live music while shopping and hanging out around the center. Dads can also grab a free coffee during the event while supplies last.

There will also be giveaway opportunities throughout the evening from participating vendors and businesses at the market.

Honestly feels like one of those easy summer evenings where you can just walk around, snack, shop local, and hang out with the family without overthinking it.
